Study Notes
Sterilization Methods and Equipment
- Autoclave: Equipment using moist heat under pressure for sterilization.
- Chemical Vapor Sterilization: Sterilization achieved with hot formaldehyde vapors under pressure.
- Dry Heat Sterilizer: Equipment using heated air for sterilization.
- Ultrasonic Cleaner: Equipment that employs sound waves traveling through a liquid to loosen and remove debris.
Sterilization Monitoring and Indicators
- Biologic Indicators: Vials or strips containing harmless bacterial spores, used to verify sterilization by confirming the destruction of all spore-forming microorganisms.
- Process Indicators: Include tapes, strips, or tabs with heat-sensitive chemicals that change color upon exposure to a particular temperature. These are also known as single-parameter indicators.
- Multiparameter Indicators: Strips placed in packages, changing color when exposed to a combination of heat, temperature, and time. These are also called process integrators.
Instrument Classification and Handling
- Critical Instruments: Penetrate soft tissue or bone, requiring sterilization.
- Semicritical Instruments: Contact oral tissues but don't penetrate soft tissue or bone, requiring high-level disinfection.
- Noncritical Instruments: Contact intact skin, needing low-level disinfection.
Contamination Control and Safety
- Contaminated Area: Designated space for precleaning contaminated items.
- Clean Area: Area for storing sterilized instruments, fresh disposable supplies, and prepared trays.
- Event-Related Packaging: Instruments in packages remain sterile until an event like torn or wet packaging compromises sterility.
- Wicking: Process where microorganisms are drawn through wet or damp paper packaging, contaminating instruments within.
- Safety Data Sheet (SDS): OSHA's requirement for each hazardous chemical in a facility, replacing Material Data Sheets.
- Use-Life: Time period during which a germicidal solution remains effective post-preparation.
