STCW Regulations for Rest Periods
- In any 24-hour period, all persons assigned duty as officer in charge of a watch or as a rating forming part of a watch must be provided with at least 10 hours of rest.
- If the hours of rest are divided into two periods, one of the periods must be at least 6 hours long.
- The requirements for rest periods do not apply in situations where the ship is in a port of call, or in a safe anchorage, and the crew is not on call.
- The minimum period of 10 hours of rest can be reduced to not less than 6 consecutive hours if the crew member has at least 70 hours of rest in any 7-day period.
- Administrations are required to ensure that watch schedules are posted on board and that crew members are aware of their rest periods, and to take into account the principles of good practice in watchkeeping arrangements.
