Variables
- A variable is a factor that can change in quality, quantity, or size, and its characteristics take different values in different persons, places, or things.
Types of Variables
- Categorical or Qualitative Variable: A variable that cannot be specified in numbers, and therefore, categories have to be made for it. Examples: title of a book, blood group of a student, gender, and grades of students in a course.
- Quantitative or Numerical Variable: A variable that can be specified in numbers, and can be measured in the usual sense. Examples: age, weight of pre-school children, number of pages in a book, and weight of a person.
Random Variable
- A random variable is a variable whose values obtained arise as a result of chance factors, and cannot be exactly predicted in advance. Example: adult height.
Discrete Variable
- A discrete variable is a characteristic that is countable and can take on discrete values. Examples: number of children in a family, birth year of a student, and number of missing teeth.
Continuous Variable
- A continuous variable is a characteristic that is measurable and can assume all possible values within a given range of values. Examples: weight, pressure, and skull circumference.
Measurement
- Measurement is the assignment of numbers to objects or events according to a set of rules.
- Nominal Scale: The lowest measurement scale, which involves "naming" observations or classifying them into various mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive categories. Examples: medical diagnoses, classification of male-female, and well-sick.
