Study Notes
Two Kinds of Statistics
- Descriptive statistics summarize and simplify sample characteristics.
- Inferential statistics generalize about the population based on sample characteristics.
- Descriptive statistics are useful when information is available for the whole population.
- Examples of population data: loyalty cards.
Symbols for Population and Sample Statistics
- The population mean is denoted by μ.
- The sample mean is denoted by x bar.
Types of Data - Categorical Data
- Categorical data can be divided into groups.
- Examples: Grape variety, social class, gender.
Types of Data - Numerical Data
- Numerical data is measurable and ordered.
- The distance between values is meaningful.
- Examples: Robert Parker rating, price, height, weight, amount.
Variables
- A Nominal variable is a list of categories used to classify objects.
- Examples of nominal variables: religious preference, race, sex.
- An Ordinal variable assigns values to objects based on ranking.
- Examples of ordinal variable: rating scales, Likert/Osgood scales.
Analyzing Categorical Data
- The frequency of a category is the number of times it appears in the dataset (n times).
- The relative frequency of a category is the proportion of times it appears in the dataset (% of times).
Analyzing Numerical Data
- The sample mean is the average of all observations in a sample.
- The sample mean is denoted by x bar.
- The population mean is the average of all x values in the entire population, denoted by μ.
- The median is the middle value that divides the sample or population into two equal parts.
- The median is insensitive to extreme scores.
Distributions of Variables
- A distribution with a single peak is unimodal.
- A distribution with two peaks is bimodal.
- A distribution with more than two peaks is multimodal.
Outliers
- An outlier is an observation that is substantially different from other observations.
- Outliers may not be representative of the population.
The Notion of Variance
- Variance measures the spread of data around the mean.
- A small variance indicates that the data points are close to the mean.
- A large variance indicates that the data points are spread out around the mean.
Standard Deviation
- Standard deviation describes the variability in the distribution.
- It is the average distance of data points from the mean.
- It is calculated by taking the square root of the variance.
Z Score
- A Z score tells us how many standard deviations an x value is away from the mean.
- A Z score can be used to compute probabilities.
- A z-score is the standardized variate.
Table of Normal Distribution
- The table of the normal distribution is used to find probabilities associated with specific Z score values.
