Mean for Grouped Data
Mean for Grouped Data
A measure of central tendency used in grouped data, with each class interval's frequency assumed to be concentrated around its midpoint.

Statistics and Probability
- Statistics is the science of collecting, organizing, analyzing, interpreting, and presenting data.
- Probability is the branch of mathematics concerning numerical descriptions of how likely an event is to occur, or how likely a proposition is to be true.
Measures of Central Tendency
- Mean: The sum of all values divided by the total number of values.
- Direct method: Mean (X) = Σfixi / Σfi
- Assumed mean method: Mean (x) = a + Σfidi / Σfi
- Step deviation method: Mean (x) = a + hΣfidi / Σfi
- Median: The middle value when the data is arranged in order.
- Calculated using the cumulative frequency table for grouped data
- Median = 1 + (n/2) - cf /f * h where;
- 1 is the lower limit of the median class
- n is the number of observations
- h is the class width
- cf is the cumulative frequency of the class before the median class
- f is the frequency of the median class
- Mode: The most frequent value.
- Determined from the grouped frequency distribution: Mode = l + (f - fo) / (2f-fo-f1) × h, where;
- l is the lower limit of the modal class.
- h is the width of the modal class.
- f is the frequency of the modal class.
- fo is the frequency of the class preceding the modal class.
- f1 is the frequency of the class succeeding the modal class.
Cumulative Frequency Distributions
- "Less than" cumulative frequency distribution: Arranges data showing the number of values less than each upper class boundary.
- "More than" cumulative frequency distribution: Arranges data showing the number of values greater than each lower class boundary.
Graphical Representation
- Ogive: A graph of a cumulative frequency distribution. Used to determine the median.
Probability
- Probability of an event: The ratio of the number of favorable outcomes to the total number of possible outcomes.
- Probability (P(E)) = Favorable outcomes / Total possible outcomes
- Complement of an event: The event that a particular event does not occur
- P(E) + P(E') = 1
