    Study Notes

    Properties of Matter

    • All kinds of matter have two common properties: occupying space (having a volume) and having mass

    States of Matter

    • There are three states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas
    • Any substance can exist in these three states depending on the pressure and temperature
    • Changing the temperature and/or pressure can change the state in which a substance exists

    States of Matter

    • Solids have a fixed volume, high density, and a definite shape, and do not flow.
    • Liquids have a fixed volume, average to high density, no definite shape, take the shape of their container, and generally flow easily.
    • Gases have no fixed volume, expand to fill their container, have low density, no definite shape, take the shape of their container, and flow easily.

    Thermal Properties

    • Increasing the temperature causes an increase in volume (expansion).
    • Decreasing the temperature causes a decrease in volume (contraction).

    Gas Properties

    • Temperature affects gases more than liquids and solids.
    • The volume of a gas can be easily reduced at a fixed temperature by increasing the pressure, making gases easily compressible.
