Study Notes
Matter is a substance that exists in different states and has physical and chemical properties. The three main states of matter are solid, liquid, and gas. In solids, particles are tightly packed together, and the shape and volume do not change. In liquids, particles have more ability to move around, and the shape and volume can change. In gases, particles have the ability to move around and can change shape and volume at any given temperature and pressure.
Physical properties of matter are those that can be observed or measured without changing the composition of the matter. These properties are independent of the chemical composition of the matter. Physical properties of matter can be grouped into two categories: intensive and extensive properties. Intensive properties are those that do not change with the change in the mass of the substance, such as density, colour, hardness, melting and boiling points, and electrical conductivity. Extensive properties are those that change with the change in the mass of the substance, such as mass, weight, and volume.
Chemical properties of matter are those that can only be detected when a material is in the process of being changed into another substance. Chemical properties are related to the chemical composition of the matter and are not independent of it.
Matter can change from one state to another by either using or releasing energy, and it is usually associated with changes in temperature and pressure. A simple example is water. If you have a block of ice, you have solid water. If you place the ice in a temperature above its melting point, it changes into liquid water. If you place the liquid water in a temperature above its boiling point, it changes into water gas.
In a physical change, the same element or compound is present before and after the change, and the same molecule is present through the changes. Physical changes are related to physical properties since some measurements require that changes be made to the physical properties of the matter.
In a chemical change, the chemical composition of the matter changes, and new substances are created. Chemical changes are related to chemical properties since chemical properties can only be detected when a material is in the process of being changed into another substance.
In both a physical and chemical change, matter is conserved, meaning that during the process, particles are neither created nor destroyed
