States of Matter

  • Solids have a fixed shape and volume. They retain their form through cohesive forces between particles called atoms, molecules, or ions. Think of a brick wall or a block of ice.
  • Liquids also possess a definite volume but lack rigid boundaries. Their particles move freely past one another while still being held together by intermolecular forces. Water and oil are common examples.
  • Gases exhibit neither a defined shape nor volume. Due to increased kinetic energy, particles efficiently fill any container they occupy without touching each other. Air, steam, and helium are familiar gases.
  • Plasma, sometimes referred to as the fourth state, comes from ionized gases where electrons have been separated from their atomic nuclei due to high temperatures or intense electric fields. It makes up roughly 99% of all visible matter in the universe.
