Study Notes
Human Factors in Maintenance
- Human factors are the rules, procedures, written documents, machines, tools, test equipment, and physical structure of aircraft that make up the standard operating procedures.
The L-H-S System
- The L-H-S system must function in a situation that includes the social and economic climate, natural environment, and human beings such as controllers, flight crews, engineers, maintenance personnel, management, and administration people.
The Dirty Dozen
- The Dirty Dozen are 12 human factors that contribute to maintenance errors:
- Lack of communication (failure to transmit, receive, or provide enough information)
- Complacency (assumes that the work has been completed, feeling of self-satisfaction and false confidence)
- Distraction (anything that draws your attention away from the task at hand)
- Lack of teamwork (failure to work together to accomplish a shared goal)
- Pressure (makes you do things in a hurry)
- Lack of assertiveness (failure to speak up or document concerns about instructions, orders, or the actions of others)
- Stress (physical, chemical, or emotional factor that causes physical or mental tension)
- Lack of awareness (failure to recognize a situation, understand what it is, and predict the possible results)
- Lack of foresight (failure to recognize all the consequences of an action or lack of foresight)
- Norms (unwritten rules that are followed or tolerated by most of the organization)
- Resource constraints (not having enough manpower, equipment, documentation, time, parts, etc. to complete a task)
- Lack of knowledge (shortage of training, information, and/or ability to perform successfully)
The Filthy Fifteen
- The Filthy Fifteen are additional human factors that contribute to maintenance errors, aside from the Dirty Dozen.
