Scope
- All Spring Fire Department personnel must familiarize themselves with and adhere to the CDU guideline
- The Fire Chief or designee is responsible for reviewing and updating the guideline annually
Device Use
- On-duty firefighters can use the CDU, prioritizing those involved in recent firefighting activities
- All members are encouraged to use the CDU frequently to help minimize toxins from acute and chronic exposures
- Only Spring Fire Department personnel are authorized to use the CDU
Procedure
- Firefighters involved in fire incidents are encouraged to use the CDU as soon as possible after returning to the station
- Personnel must shower before using the CDU
- It is recommended to wear loose-fitting fitness attire, clean sports shoes, shower toiletries, and a towel inside the unit
- Work boots and on-duty uniforms should not be worn inside the unit
- Individuals with cardiac or medical issues, pregnant women, and breastfeeding individuals should not use the CDU
- Exit the unit immediately if feeling uncomfortable, dizzy, experiencing a headache, or fatigue
- Read and understand warning labels and the user manual
- Always sign in to document CDU use
- The maximum temperature setting for the unit is 100-104° Fahrenheit, targeting an average user temperature of 80-99° Fahrenheit
- Set the timer for approximately 25 minutes, allowing for a 10-minute warm-up period, followed by a 12-15 minute decontamination session
- Wait for the unit to warm up to a comfortable level prior to entering (80-82° Fahrenheit)
- The unit should be warm enough to promote sweating, but not raise core body temperature
- Use the provided cycle bikes for low-level movement and exercise
- Cycle for 12-15 minutes to induce sweating, and avoid exceeding 12 minutes during initial sessions
