Chemical Decontamination Unit Purpose

• To remove harmful chemicals absorbed during firefighting activities, including pyrolyzed plastics, metals, and brominated fire retardants
• To help mitigate the disease process that firefighters are prone to due to on-the-job exposure

Chemical Decontamination Unit Who is eligible

• All Spring Fire Department personnel are responsible for knowing and complying with the Chemical Decontamination Unit procedures
• On-duty firefighters may rotate through the closest fire station with a Chemical Decontamination Unit to use the device
• Priority for use will be given to on-duty, operations personnel involved in recent firefighting activities

Chemical Decontamination Unit Usage

• Firefighters involved in a fire incident should utilize the unit as soon as practical after returning to the station
• Shower before using the unit
• Bring loose-fitting fitness gear, clean sports shoes, shower toiletries, and a towel
• DO NOT use the unit without medical clearance if you have cardiac or medical issues, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding

Chemical Decontamination Unit Safety

• Exit the unit immediately if you feel uncomfortable, dizzy, develop a headache, and/or become fatigued
• Read and understand warning labels and the user manual before using the unit
• The maximum temperature setting is 100-104° Fahrenheit, with the user being exposed to between 80-99° Fahrenheit on average
• Set the timer to approximately 25 minutes, allowing for a 10-minute warm-up period, and a 12-15 minute personal decontamination time in the unit
• The Chemical Decontamination Unit needs to be warm enough for comfort, usually about 80-82° Fahrenheit
• Only the cycle bikes that came with the unit are to be used inside

Chemical Decontamination Unit Exercise

• Cycle at your own pace for 12-15 minutes to produce a detoxifying sweat
• Do not exceed 12 minutes on your first session, or subsequent sessions, until you break a sweat
• DO NOT EXCEED 15 MINUTES to ensure your core body temperature does not elevate
• Use towels inside the unit to absorb sweat and prevent staining
• Open the window to allow fresh air to enter your lungs
• Turn off the unit when finished and open all windows to allow excess moisture to release
• Clean and sanitize all equipment using a damp towel with a very mild soap solution
• Always shower immediately after using the unit to prevent reabsorbing sweat
• REHYDRATE: Drink plenty of water before, during, and after use, from glass, not plastic
