Solid-Liquid Mixture
- Animal manure is a mixture of urine and fecal material, with additional solid and liquid elements added along the way.
- Examples of added solid elements include: wasted feed, soil particles, surrounding vegetation, animal hair or poultry feathers, and biological materials.
- Examples of added liquid elements include: additional water from leakage, flushing, cleaning, and rainfall.
Solid-Liquid Separation
- Animal fecal material varies depending on animal species and physical form of feed.
- This variation leads to different handling methods, including solid-liquid separation.
Reasons for Separation
- Reduce maintenance requirements of subsequent storage and treatment operations.
- Reduce organic and nutrient load on subsequent biological treatment processes.
- Make use of the solid fraction for a beneficial use.
- Make available the usable function of a tank, basin, or lagoon that has become filled with solids.
Solid-Liquid Separation Processes
- Two characteristics of solids in liquids are used as bases for separation: density and entrapped air.
- Unit vibration causes trapped solid fraction to move across the screen surface to an outlet chute.
- Vibration also cuts off any fibrous material that might tend to plug the fabric by stapling.
Filtering Devices
- Rotary vacuum filter: uses a rotating drum made of filter fabric, with vacuum inside the drum drawing moisture in by negative pressure.
- Solids stick to the filter fabric and are removed from the fabric with a metal edge as the drum rotates.
- Roller belt press filter: uses a continuous belt of filter fabric to move material through the system.
- Press rollers squeeze moisture from the solids, and a rotary brush removes solids that stick to the belt.
- Wet fibers are squeezed onto the screen roller by the rubber roller, and liquid squeezed out of the fibers falls through the screen roller and is directed to the sedimentation pit.
