    Study Notes

    Soft Tissue Tumors

    • Soft tissue refers to all supporting tissues in the body except bones and skin linings, including fat, muscle, nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue.
    • Soft tissue tumors are abnormal growths of tissue and can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous).
    • There are over 100 types of soft tissue tumors, and they can emerge anywhere in the body, including tendons, muscles, ligaments, cartilage, nerves, blood vessels, fat, and other tissues.

    Characteristics of Soft Tissue Tumors

    • Benign soft tissue tumors grow slowly, are usually painful to the touch, and tend to be smaller than 5 cm.
    • Malignant tumors (sarcomas) grow rapidly, are often painless, and may have satellite lesions around them.

    Morphology and Clinical Manifestation

    • Benign masses are usually round, but can be elongated like a sausage, and can feel firm or soft.
    • Sarcomas are more likely to occur in arms and legs (43%), followed by internal organs (34%), chest and back (10%), and other locations (13%).
    • Arms and legs masses are more likely to come to clinical attention quickly due to limited space for growth.

    Diagnosis and Treatment

    • Not all soft tissue masses require surgery, and removal of a known benign tumor can be safely delayed.
    • Suspected malignant growths should be biopsied as soon as possible.

    Tumor Types

    • Benign tumor: non-cancerous cell growth that does not invade nearby tissues or spread to distant organs.
    • Malignant tumor: cancerous cell growth that can invade surrounding tissues and metastasize to other parts of the body.
