Formations

4-4-2 Formation

  • Solid defense, reliant on 2 technical but disciplined midfields
  • 4 attacking players (with left/right midfields who can play as wingers)
  • Fullbacks encouraged to overlap
  • 2 CMs, one more defensive minded, one more attacking minded
  • Wingers move up and down the field vertically, but also horizontally across the width
  • When LM/RM transition into winger role, one of CF/ST drops down to help with midfield

4-4-2 in Attack

  • One striker drops down to help midfield, providing help for the other striker
  • Defenders move up to help provide passing options
  • LM/RM transition into winger role, one of CF/ST drops down to help midfield

3-5-2 Formation

  • Solid defense, reliant on 3 centre-backs
  • Wing-backs drop back, playing more upfront with midfielders
  • Fullbacks play more upfront with midfielders, but drop down in defense
  • If LWB/RWB can't drop down, DM acts as additional centre-back (back 4)

3-5-2 in Defense
