Skull Bones and Processes
- Zygomatic Bone: Forms the prominence of the cheeks; also known as the cheekbone.
- Sphenoid Bone: Butterfly-shaped bone located in the middle of the skull; contributes to the base and sides of the skull.
- Vomer: Thin, flat bone that forms part of the nasal septum; helps divide the nasal cavity.
- Zygomatic Process of Temporal Bone: A projection that connects the temporal bone to the zygomatic bone; contributes to the zygomatic arch.
- Styloid Process: Slender, pointed structure providing attachments for muscles and ligaments associated with the tongue and neck.
- Mastoid Process: Bony protrusion located behind the ear; serves as an attachment point for neck muscles and is filled with air spaces.
- Occipital Condyle: Rounded, knob-like projections located at the base of the skull; articulate with the first cervical vertebra (atlas) to allow nodding of the head.
Additional Skull Features
- Temporal Bone: Part of the lateral walls and base of the skull; houses structures of the ear and contributes to the zygomatic arch.
- Parietal Bone: Forms the top and sides of the skull; paired bones that articulate with the frontal, occipital, and temporal bones.
- Maxilla: Upper jawbone; contains the upper teeth and forms part of the orbits and nasal cavity.
- Palatine Bone: L-shaped bone forming the back part of the hard palate and part of the nasal cavity's walls; contributes to the orbits.
- Mandibular Fossa: Depression in the temporal bone where the mandible articulates to form the jaw joint.
- Foramen Magnum: Large opening at the base of the skull through which the spinal cord exits; connects the brain to the spinal column.
- Occipital Bone: Forms the back and base of the skull; contains the foramen magnum and the occipital condyles.
- Lambdoid Suture: Connection between the occipital and parietal bones; resembles the Greek letter lambda and signifies the meeting point of these bones.
