Skin Structure and Function
- Skin is the largest human organ, covering approximately 20 square feet.
- Skin thickness varies but is typically a few centimeters.
- Skin functions include sweating, temperature sensation, and hair growth.
- Skin injury leads to temporary or permanent loss of function.
- Sensory functions are impaired, and affected skin loses its ability to sense temperature changes because of impaired pores.
Epidermis Layers
- The epidermis protects from environmental harm (bacteria, pollutants) and regulates temperature.
- Composed of several layers working together.
- Upper Layer (Epidermis): Outermost layer, dead keratin-filled cells, contains melanin pigment.
- Dermis (Middle Layer): Beneath epidermis; connective tissue, blood vessels, sweat glands, nerves, and hair follicles. Supports and nourishes epidermis.
- Subcutaneous Layer (Hypodermis): Deepest layer; fat and connective tissue, protecting internal organs, and regulating temperature.
