Study Notes
Skin Layers Overview
- Skin consists of three main layers: Epidermis, Dermis, and Subcutaneous (Hypodermis).
Epidermis
- The outermost layer of skin, known for its protective role.
- Contains various strata: Stratum corneum, Stratum lucindum, Stratum granulosum, Stratum spinosum (malpighii), and Stratum germinativum (basale).
- Houses melanocytes, which produce pigment.
- New skin cells are created here, migrating upwards and shedding approximately every month.
- Stratum corneum consists of dead skin cells and keratin.
Dermis
- The second layer under the epidermis, providing strength and flexibility.
- Contains dermal papillae, papillary layer, and reticular layer.
- Responsible for sweat and sebum production through glands.
- Houses hair follicles, with roots originating from this layer.
- Contains nerves that facilitate sensation and blood vessels that supply the skin.
- The papillary layer supplies nutrients to the epidermis and helps regulate temperature.
Subcutaneous (Hypodermis)
- The deepest skin layer, connecting skin to underlying bones and muscles.
- Composed of fat, blood vessels, and connective tissue.
- Blood vessels and nerves grow from this layer, providing support to the upper layers.
Specialized Structures and Cells
- Papilla refers to the indentation at the base of hair follicles, located in the dermis.
- Keratinocytes are produced in the Stratum granulosum of the epidermis.
- The stratum basale (germinativum) contains stem cells (keratinocyte stem cells), melanocytes, Langerhans cells (immune response), and Merkel cells (touch receptors).
Summary of Functions
- Epidermis: Protection, new cell generation, pigmentation.
- Dermis: Sensation, blood supply, glandular secretion, and hair growth.
- Subcutaneous: Insulation, energy storage, and structural support.
