Skin Structure
- Skin has two main layers
- Outermost layer provides structural and nutritional support to the epidermis
- Innermost layer is the deepest layer
Stratum Basale
- Deepest layer of the epidermis
- Contains three main cell types:
- Keratinocytes: produce keratin
- Melanocytes: produce melanin
- Merkel cells: associated with nerve endings, providing touch sensation
Stratum Spinosum
- Second deepest layer of the epidermis
- Contains prickle cells
- These cells can replace other missing epidermal cells if the upper layer is removed
- Langerhans cells help stimulate the immune system
Stratum Granulosum
- Middle layer of the epidermis
- Cells in this layer lose their nuclei
- Contains a high proportion of keratin
