Study Notes
Epidermis
- The epidermis can be up to 30 cells thick and is composed of 5 epithelial layers
- Keratin waterproofs the skin and protects the layers below it
- Melanin produced by melanocytes protects us from harmful UV rays from the sun
Dermis
- The dermis is 15 to 40 times thicker than the epidermis
- Connective tissue in the dermis makes the skin more flexible and prevents tears
- Collagen maintains the general health of the skin and elastin increases the elasticity of the skin
- The dermis contains lymph nodes, blood vessels, sweat glands, oil glands, hair follicles, muscle fibers, and nerve fibers
- The dermis is vascularized, but the epidermis is not
Tactile Corpuscle
- Located superficially
- Sensitive to light touch
- Also known as Meissner's corpuscle
Lamellated Corpuscle
- Located deep in the skin
- Sensitive to deep pressure and vibrations
- Also known as Pacinian corpuscle
