    Study Notes

    Cartilage

    • Hyaline cartilage is the most common type of cartilage, found in the larynx, trachea, epiphyseal plates, articular cartilage, costal cartilages, and respiratory cartilages.
    • White fibrocartilage is found in intervertebral discs and symphysis pubis.
    • Yellow elastic fibrocartilage is found in the tip of the nose, auricle, epiglottis, and Eustachian tube.

    The Skeletal System

    • Functions of the Skeleton: Provides shape, protects vital organs, facilitates muscle attachment, enables movement, transmits weight, produces blood cells, and stores calcium salts.
    • Classification of Bones: Divided according to location (axial and appendicular), ossification process (intramembranous and intracartilaginous), and shape (long, short, flat, irregular, sesamoid).
    • Structure of a Long Bone: Composed of two epiphyses (ends), a diaphysis (shaft), a metaphysis (area near the epiphysis), and a periosteum (outer membrane).
    • Pneumatic Bones Are bones containing air sinuses, found in the skull surrounding the nose, such as the frontal and maxillary bones.

    Joints

    • Fibrous Joints: Bones connected by fibrous tissue. No joint cavity. No movement allowed.
    • Cartilaginous Joints: Bones connected by cartilage. No joint cavity. Limited movement allowed. Divided into primary (synchondrosis) and secondary (symphysis) cartilaginous joints.
    • Synovial Joints: Bones connected by a fibrous capsule, lined with synovial membrane. Contains synovial fluid and allows free movement.

    Intracapsular Structures:

    • Articular Disc: A disc of fibrocartilage that divides the joint cavity into two compartments.
    • Menisci: Semi-lunar plates of fibrocartilage found in specific joints, like the knee.
    • Ligaments: Reinforce and stabilize the joint capsule internally.
    • Tendon: A strong fibrous cord that attaches muscle to bone, can be found inside certain joints.
