Study Notes
Simple Past Tense
- Used to talk about completed actions in the past
- Formed by adding -ed to the root form of regular verbs (e.g. "play" becomes "played")
- Irregular verbs have unique past tense forms, e.g. "put" remains the same, while "go" becomes "went"
Forming Negative Sentences
- Use the formula did not + [root form of verb] to make a verb negative in the simple past tense
- Can use the contraction didn't instead of did not
- Exception: for the verb to be, use was not (singular) or were not (plural) instead of did not
- Contractions: wasn't (singular) and weren't (plural)
Asking Questions
- Start with did, followed by the subject, then the base form of the verb
- Example: "Did you walk to the shop yesterday?"
Uses of the Simple Past Tense
- Talk about actions that started and finished in the past
- Describe past habits
