Simple Past Grammar Structure
Affirmative Sentences
- Formed using the past tense of the verb
- Subject + Verb (in past tense) + Object
- Examples:
- I went to the store.
- She ate breakfast at 8am.
- They played soccer yesterday.
Negative Sentences
- Formed using the past tense of the verb with "not"
- Subject + did not + Verb (in base form) + Object
- Examples:
- I did not go to the store.
- She did not eat breakfast at 8am.
- They did not play soccer yesterday.
Interrogative Sentences
- Formed using the past tense of the verb with a question word (what, where, when, etc.)
- Question word + did + Subject + Verb (in base form) + Object
- Examples:
- What did you do yesterday?
- Where did she go last night?
- When did they finish their project?
Regular Verb Conjugation
- Most verbs follow a regular pattern in the past tense
- -ed is added to the base form of the verb
- Examples:
- Base form: walk
- Past tense: walked
- Base form: run
- Past tense: ran (exception: note that "run" is an irregular verb)
Irregular Verb Conjugation
