- Cocamidopropyl betaine (30%): 5.00 g - Anti-irritant/Foam booster
- Dimethicone copolyol: 3.00 g - Conditioner
- Panthenol: 0.30 g - Wetting agent / humectant
- Perfume: q.s. - Wetting / Humectant
- PEG-3 distearate: 2.00 g - Thickening agent
- Polyquaternium 7: 0.25 g - Anti-static agent
- Preservative: q.s. - Preservative / sequestering agent
- Sodium Chloride: q.s. - Thickening agent
- Sodium laureth sulfate (70%): 11.50 g - Surfactant (Anionic)
- Tetrasodium EDTA: 0.10 g - Preservative/Sequestering agent
- Water (deionized): Aqua (INCI): q.s. to make 100.00 g - Vehicle
Surfactant Types
- Anionic: Principal and main ingredients of shampoo
- Non-ionic: Co-surfactant, foam booster, rheology modifier, viscosity inducer, stabilizer, solubilizer.
- Amphoteric: Impart mildness to shampoo, minimize burning sensation in eyes.
- Cationic: Not use in shampoos
Surfactant Function
- Surfactants enhance solubility of compounds not soluble in water
- Enable water and oil to mix
- Surface active agent that reduces surface tension, increasing spreading and wetting properties
Solubility
- Citric acid: 1 in less than 1 part of water
- Cocamidopropyl betaine (30%): Surfactant
- Dimethicone copolyol: Immiscible with water, >30.8 µg/mL
Emulsifying Properties
- PEG-3 distearate: Emulsifying, 25- 35% aqueous solution, clear liquid with a mild odor
- Other components: Water soluble, emulsifiers/surfactants soluble in water at room temperature
Manufacturing Procedure (Method B)
- Step 1: Weigh all ingredients
- Step 2: Dissolve SLS in water
- Step 3: Add Cocamidopropyl betaine (30%) with stirring
- Step 4: Add remaining ingredients except citric acid and NaCl
- Step 5: Add deionized water to make 100ml
- Step 6: Filter the mixture
- Step 7: pH Adjustment: Add citric acid and adjust pH to 5.6 to 6.2
- Step 8: Viscosity Adjustment: Add NaCl by continuous stirring until desired viscosity is achieved
- Step 9: Pack and label in appropriate container
Quality Control Tests
- Physical Appearance: Color, clarity, odor, texture
- pH: Measure using a pH meter
- Rheology (Viscosity): Brookfield viscometer
- Foaming ability & Stability: Check volume of foam formed and remaining (after 20 minutes)
- Dirt Dispersion: India ink test tube
- Wetting time: Draves Test Method
- % Solids: Evaporating dish
- Surface Tension: Using 10% shampoo at room temperature, formula provided
- Stability Study
- Microbiology test
- Evaluation of safety: Skin and eye toxicity
Specification or Limits
- pH range: 5.0 - 7.0
- Rheology (viscosity): 9,593.67 to 910 Centipoise (CPS)
- Foam ability: 100ml or more
- Dirt dispersion: None or no distribution ink in foam
- Wetting time: Shorter time, means max concentration of detergent at different storage conditions
- Solids: 20-30%
- Surface tension: 72.28 dyn/cm to 40 dyn/cm
- Stability: Shelf life is 3 years unopened, and 18 months if opened
