Sexual Response Cycle
- Developed by William Masters and Virginia Johnson
- Average penis size: 3 inches flaccid, 6 inches erect
- Vagina is elastic and can conform to penises of various sizes
- Four phases: Excitement, Plateau, Orgasm, Resolution
- Excitement – Marked by erection of penis or clitoris and lubrication and expansion of the vaginal canal.
- Plateau - Women experience further swelling of the vagina and increased blood flow to the labia minora, and men experience full erection and often exhibit pre-ejaculatory fluid.
- Orgasm - Women experience rhythmic contractions of the pelvis and uterus along with increased muscle tension. In men, pelvic contractions are accompanied by a buildup of seminal fluid near the urethra that is ultimately forced out by contractions of genital muscles.
- Resolution - The relatively rapid return to an unaroused state accompanied by a decrease in blood pressure and muscular relaxation. While many women can quickly repeat the sexual response cycle, men must pass through a longer refractory period as part of resolution.
- Refractory period - A period of time that follows an orgasm during which an individual is incapable of experiencing another orgasm.
- As men age, their refractory periods tend to span longer periods of time
Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)
- Acquired through sexual contact
Human Sexuality
- Sex - Physiological differences among male, female, and intersex bodies
- Gender - Socio-cultural distinctions associated with being male, female, or intersex
- Sexuality - Sexual interest and attraction to others, as well as their capacity to have erotic experiences and responses
- Sex and gender are not interchangeable
- A person's sex does not always correspond with his or her gender
- Characteristics of sex do not vary between different human societies
- Characteristics of gender may vary greatly between different societies
-
Sexual orientation - A person's emotional and sexual attraction to a particular sex (male or female). Divided into:
- Heterosexuality (straight) - Attraction to individuals of the opposite sex
- Homosexuality (gay) - Attraction to individuals of the same sex
- Bisexuality - Attraction to individuals of either sex
- Asexuality - No attraction to either sex
- Sexual orientation is not a choice but a relatively stable characteristic of a person that cannot be changed
- Gender Role - Society's concept of how men and women are expected to act and behave, based on societal norms, learned through play. Adherence demonstrates fulfilling social expectations but not necessarily personal preferences.
- Gender Identity - An individual's self-conception of being male or female based on his or her association with masculine or feminine gender roles.
- Cisgender - People whose sense of personal identity and gender corresponds with their birth sex
- Transgendered - Individuals who identify with the role that is the opposite of their biological sex
- Transsexuals - Transgendered individuals who wish to alter their bodies through medical interventions such as surgery and hormonal therapy
- Cross-dressing - Typically a form of self-expression, entertainment, or personal style, not necessarily an expression against one’s assigned gender
- Human sexuality - People's sexual interest in and attraction to others. May be experienced and expressed through thoughts, fantasies, desires, beliefs, attitudes, values, behaviors, practices, roles, and relationships
- Hypothalamus - Plays an important role in motivated behaviors, and sex is no exception
- Medial Preoptic Area - Involved in the ability to engage in sexual behavior, but it does not affect sexual motivation
- Amygdala and Nucleus Accumbens - Involved in motivation for sexual behavior, but they do not affect the ability to engage in it
- Love language - Describes the ways that people receive and express love in a relationship. Knowing your partner’s love language and letting them know yours can help you ensure you both feel loved and appreciated in your relationship.
