- Transgender: a person whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth
- Queer: an umbrella term to encompass sexual and gender identities that are not heterosexual or cisgender
- Questioning: individuals who are unsure or exploring their sexual orientation or gender identity
- Intersex: a person born with variations in sex characteristics that do not fit typical binary notions of male or female bodies
- Asexual: people who experience little or no sexual attraction to others
- Pansexual: individuals who are attracted to people regardless of their gender identity or biological sex
- Non-binary: people whose gender identity doesn't fit within the traditional binary of male and female
- Genderqueer: similar to non-binary, a term used by individuals whose gender identity falls outside of the traditional categories of male or female

- If unsure about terminology, ask the patient
