    Separation Anxiety Disorder

    • Characterized by excessive fear or anxiety concerning separation from those to whom the individual is attached.
    • Anxiety exceeds what is expected for the person’s developmental level.
    • Interferes with social, academic, occupational, or other areas of functioning.
    • Most commonly diagnosed between ages 5-6 years old.
    • Predisposing factors may include:
      • Biological influences such as genetics and temperament
      • Environmental influences like stressful life events
      • Family influences such as parental overprotection, insecure parent-child attachment, and maternal depression.
    • Treatment options include behavioral therapy, family therapy, group therapy, and psychopharmacology.
    • Nursing assessment:
      • Onset may occur between preschool age and adolescence
      • Child has difficulty separating from their primary caregiver or maternal-rolled parent.
      • Separation (or anticipation of separation) results in tantrums, crying, screaming, complaints of physical problems, and clinging behaviors.
