Self-Enhancement
- The average person tends to overestimate their abilities and positive traits, ranking themselves above the 50th percentile despite the fact that 50% of the population must fall below the 50th percentile
- The above-average effect reflects a more general bias called the self-enhancement motive, which causes people to process information in a way that reflects favorably on themselves
- The self-enhancement motive leads people to focus on information that is favorable to themselves and be critical of information that is unfavorable
Self-Esteem
- The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale is used to determine self-esteem by having participants rate themselves on a series of statements on a scale where 1 is strongly disagree and 4 is strongly agree
- The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale has been used in North America and other western cultures to assess self-esteem
- North America, in particular, shows that the average score on the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale is higher than the mid-point
- Self-esteem has been shown to be higher in men than in women across many countries
- The difference in self-esteem between men and women is not consistent, and tends to be smaller in countries where gender equality is higher
- Self-esteem increases from adolescence to around 60 years of age and decreases from there
- Older adults have a higher self-esteem than young adults
- Self-discrepancy theory suggests that people have a higher self-esteem when their current self is closer to their ideal self
Self-Esteem and Positive Outcomes
- There is an ongoing self-esteem movement that considers high self-esteem to be beneficial for people and aims to increase self-esteem in individuals
- High self-esteem is correlated with many positive outcomes, including better grades, less depression, less stress, and a longer life
- People with high self-esteem are more likely to take initiative, defend others, start relationships, be more assertive in groups, work harder after initial failure, and be willing to attempt new things
