Study Notes
- Lesson 6 is on Self-directed Learning
Key Questions
- How can the teacher keep independent learners’ enthusiasm alive in the classroom?
- What is the current strategy for meeting the needs of independent learners?
Self-Directed Learning
- Wallace et al (2001) defines self-directed learning as a process where individuals take the initiative in diagnosing their learning needs, formulating learning goals, and identifying human and material resources, with or without the assistance of others, for learning outcomes.
- Multigrade learners are encouraged to monitor their learning and to express precisely what they have learned, how they have learned it, and what they need to widen their learning according to Taole and Cornish in 2017.
- It requires learners who are focused, self-confident, goal-oriented, and accept responsibility for task completion.
- Encourages students in multigrade classrooms to take responsibility for their learning.
- Develops independent working skills.
- Can present various activities, such as creative art and play, science and math projects, and writing.
- Assists students in becoming self-regulated, strategic learners.
Guidelines for teachers to conduct self-directed learning:
- Establish high expectations.
- Keep students on track.
- Use activity sheets or modules with a step-by-step method and simple language. All materials must ensure learners are independent.
- Ensure the materials have been carefully chosen and are ready for use.
- Make sure to give enough time to the students to complete the activity.
Module Example
- In this module, you will learn to create a puppet and write your own story, then tell the story to your friends or classmates.
- Now use your puppet and tell a story to your friends or classmates.
- Examples of questions to answer after the activity are:
- What is the title of your story/dialog?
- Who is the character of the story?
- Did you enjoy making your own puppet?
- Draw and color the appropriate face (happy, sad, angry).
