Search and Handler Requirements
- The number of hides and distractions is unknown to the handler, and the dog and handler must work autonomously to resolve challenges set by the Judge in the search area.
- The team must demonstrate sustained resilience, persistence, and work in a timely, efficient, and effective manner to complete the search.
Elements
- There are four Elements: Containers, Interior, Exterior, and Vehicles.
- In the Containers Element, the hide is concealed within a container, and the dog must indicate which container has the hide.
- In the Interior Element, the hide is concealed on, under, or in an object or concealed within the environment in an indoor search area.
- In the Exterior Element, the hide is concealed on, under, or in an object or concealed within the environment in an outdoor search area.
- In the Vehicles Element, the hide is concealed on the exterior of a vehicle.
Target Odours
- The target odour can be one or more pure essential oils, including Birch, Anise, Clove, and Cypress.
- The target odours may be used in any Class as follows:
- Novice Classes: one target odour across the Elements offered
- Advanced Classes: two target odours across the Elements offered
- Excellent Classes: three target odours across the Elements offered
- Master Classes: four target odours across the Elements offered
- Ultimate Classes: four target odours in the search
Handler and Dog Responsibilities
- It is the handler's responsibility to ensure that their dog is physically well and capable of safely executing all the requirements of the search.
- Dogs with physical or behavioural challenges may participate provided they display no signs of physical discomfort or stress and can safely complete the requirements of the Class.
- Dogs may be inspected as required by the relevant member body.
Dog Attire
- A dog shall only wear a fixed collar and/or a suitable harness and a lead during a search.
- A dog may wear accessories such as paw covers, booties, jackets, and/or hair ties or bows as deemed necessary by the handler.
- Dogs must not wear electric, prong, choke, limited slip collars, head halters, or no-pull harnesses, among other prohibited items.
Judge's Authority
- The Judge shall exclude or order the removal from the trial of any dog deemed disorderly or unmanageable or exhibiting extreme stress or fear.
- The Judge may also exclude or order the removal of any person who interferes wilfully with another handler or a handler's dog or whose behaviour is objectionable.
Withdrawal of a Dog
- A handler may withdraw a dog before or during judging by notifying the Judge or nominated official.
- Following withdrawal, the team will not be able to take any further part in that search, and no scores shall be awarded.
Search Areas
- Search areas must provide firm, safe footing and adequate lighting for dogs and handlers.
- Outdoor searches may be conducted across natural, uneven surfaces, and it is the handler's responsibility to be aware of and prepared for this possibility.
Hide Relocation
- If the Judge determines that a hide must be relocated during the running of a Class/Element, it should be moved to a location that presents the same challenges as at the original location.
- The original hide location should be wiped with a non-scented alcohol wipe, and the relocated scent vessel must be left to stand in the new hide location for a minimum of ten minutes before the next dog is run.
Accessible and Inaccessible Hides
- A hide is considered accessible if a dog can pinpoint the exact location of the hide.
- A hide is considered inaccessible if it is positioned in a location where no dog can pinpoint the exact location of the hide, but dogs should be able to indicate the approximate location of the hide.
Distraction Items
- Certain searches will include distractions, which must be no closer than fifty cm to a hide.
- Distractions may be drawn from non-food items, and food distractions must be in a container.
