Scoliosis Definition
- Scoliosis is a condition where the spine is abnormally curved.
Types of Scoliosis
- There are two main types: structural (fixed) scoliosis and postural (mobile) scoliosis.
Structural (Fixed) Scoliosis
- Causes: birth defects, genetics, infections, tumors, and spinal cord injuries.
- Characterized by a fixed curvature of the spine that does not correct with movement.
- Accompanied by vertebral rotation.
- Defining characteristic: the spine has a fixed, abnormal curvature that does not change with movement.
Postural (Mobile) Scoliosis
- A possible cause: short leg length discrepancy.
- Distinguished from structural scoliosis by its temporary and correctable nature.
- Can be corrected with movement or manipulation.
Other Types of Scoliosis
- Compensatory scoliosis: develops as a response to conditions outside the spine.
- Short-leg scoliosis: a type of scoliosis caused by a leg length discrepancy.
- Idiopathic structural (fixed) scoliosis: the most common cause is unknown, but it can be caused by genetic factors.
