Study Notes

Scoliosis Definition

  • Scoliosis is a condition where the spine is abnormally curved.

Types of Scoliosis

  • There are two main types: structural (fixed) scoliosis and postural (mobile) scoliosis.

Structural (Fixed) Scoliosis

  • Causes: birth defects, genetics, infections, tumors, and spinal cord injuries.
  • Characterized by a fixed curvature of the spine that does not correct with movement.
  • Accompanied by vertebral rotation.
  • Defining characteristic: the spine has a fixed, abnormal curvature that does not change with movement.

Postural (Mobile) Scoliosis

  • A possible cause: short leg length discrepancy.
  • Distinguished from structural scoliosis by its temporary and correctable nature.
  • Can be corrected with movement or manipulation.

Other Types of Scoliosis

  • Compensatory scoliosis: develops as a response to conditions outside the spine.
  • Short-leg scoliosis: a type of scoliosis caused by a leg length discrepancy.
  • Idiopathic structural (fixed) scoliosis: the most common cause is unknown, but it can be caused by genetic factors.
