    How to Learn Philosophy

    • Three ways to study philosophy:
      • Studying the foundational thinkers of Western philosophy, especially Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle.
      • Studying the history of philosophy as a 2,600-year-old conversation. Philosophy began around 600 BC.
      • Engaging with the problems of philosophy, including questions about God, truth, morality, freedom, and the mind.

    Nature of Philosophy

    • There's no official definition of philosophy.
    • Inquiry into the nature of philosophy is called meta-philosophy.
    • Philosophy is an open-ended, pioneering discipline that constantly opens up new areas of study and methods of inquiry.
    • It's based on questioning, not answering.
    • Philosophy is the love of wisdom. (phil = love; Sophia = wisdom).
    • Wisdom is unending and ambiguous; you can only love wisdom, not possess it.
    • An Aristotelian view defines philosophy as the passionate pursuit of knowledge of reality (metaphysics and physics) and goodness (ethics/value).
    • Reality, value, and knowledge are interconnected in philosophy.
    • Philosophy is a way of being in the world, engaging with it by questioning, interacting, and responding.
    • Philosophy is the art of creating concepts, that are essential building blocks of philosophy.

    Emergence of Philosophy

    • Philosophy emerged in the Mediterranean world around 600 BC.
    • Before 600 BC, people explained the world through mythical and religious stories about spirits, gods, and goddesses.
    • Philosophy emerges with the ability to engage with and question those stories.
