Flashcards

School-age child development

School-age children explore their environment more, are active in school, church, and community activities and need specific teaching regarding safety.

Adolescent safety risks

Risks involve factors outside home, peer influence, pressure for alcohol/drug use and high suicide incidence.

Adolescents: Peer Influence Risks

Peer pressure puts them at risk for alcohol and drug use; also have a high incidence of suicide.

Minimizing adolescent suicide risk

Promote problem-solving skills, encourage strong connections with family/friends, restrict access to lethal means, and encourage cultural/religious beliefs.

Study Notes

  • School-age children are increasingly exploring their environment (Chapter 12).
  • They have friends outside their immediate neighborhood.
  • School-age children are more active in school, church, and community activities.
  • Specific teaching regarding safety in school and at play is needed for school-age children.
  • Table 27.2 contains nursing interventions to help guide parents in providing for the safety of school-age children.

Adolescent Safety Risks

  • Risks involve many factors outside the home.
  • Much of their time is spent away from home and with their peer group (Chapter 12).
  • Adults who serve as positive role models provide examples of how to behave, set expectations, and provide education to minimize risks to adolescent safety.
  • Because of peer pressure, this age-group is at risk for alcohol and drug use.
  • This age-group has a high incidence of suicide.
  • Be aware of the risks and prepared to teach adolescents and their parents the needed preventative measures for accidents and injury.
  • Help parents be aware of ways to minimize risk of adolescent suicide.
  • Promote good problem-solving abilities (e.g., conflict with peers).
  • Support strong connections to families, friends, and people in the community.
  • Restrict access to highly lethal means of suicide.
  • Encourage cultural and religious beliefs that discourage suicide and that support self-presreservation (Kaslow, 2021).

Adult Safety Risks

  • Risks to young and middle-age adults frequently result from lifestyle factors.
  • Risk factors include childrearing, high stress levels, inadequate nutrition, use of firearms, excessive alcohol intake, and substance abuse (Chapter 13).
  • In this fast-paced society there also appears to be more expression of anger, which can quickly precipitate accidents related to "road rage."
  • Help adults understand their safety risks and guide them in making lifestyle modifications.
  • Refer to resources such as classes to help quit smoking or for stress management, including employee-assistance programs.
  • Encourage adults to exercise regularly, maintain a healthy diet, practice relaxation techniques, and get adequate sleep (Chapter 43).

Older Adult Safety

  • Nursing interventions for older adults reduce patients' risk for falls and other accidents.
