Study Notes
Scholarship Eligibility
- Students can attend a summer program or course forgiveness program to replace one or two courses with a grade of "D" or below, and if the new GPA is 2.5 or higher, the scholarship application will be approved.
- Only "like" classes will be forgiven, e.g., a failed science class must be replaced with the same or similar science class.
Scholarship Maintenance
- The Seminole Tribe of Florida will continue to pay for private school scholarships for approved students for the duration of the academic year, even if their GPA falls below 2.5.
- If a student's GPA falls below 2.5, the K-12 Advisor will request a joint conference with the teacher/school and parent/guardian to develop an action plan within three weeks.
GPA Calculation
- The Center for Student Success and Services excludes exam grades, participation grades, conduct grades, and social skills grades from GPA calculation.
Private School "Tuition Freeze" / Re-Enrollment Fees
- The Center for Student Success and Services will submit payment or reimburse the cost of tuition freeze/placement hold if the parent/guardian communicates intent to prepay, submits the private school scholarship application by January 31st, and the student is in good standing and pre-approved for the scholarship.
- The parent must submit the valid 'Paid' invoice/receipt to the Center for Student Success and Services within ten business days.
Deadline Exception
- Students released from a treatment program must notify the Advisor at least seven business days prior to release and submit a Private School application no later than seven business days after release.
Private School Remedial Programs
- Placement in a private school academic remedial or alternative program requires a preliminary and follow-up meeting with the K-12 Advisor, parent, and school representative, resulting in a plan of action with an exit strategy, prior to program payment.
Student Travel Procedures
- The K-12 Advisor must receive the completed Travel packet, including the Parent Agreement and Student Travel Guidelines, from the student or parent by the established deadline.
- The student's attendance and GPA will be reviewed to confirm eligibility for the trip.
- If the trip includes an overnight stay, the parent and student will be instructed to schedule a drug screening and sign a release for the results to be sent to the Center for Student Success and Services.
GED Testing Procedures
- The student will be issued four GED vouchers to cover the cost of the initial pre-test.
- The GED pre-test will be used to identify if the student is ready for the official exam and can be used to identify if further sessions are needed.
- Upon completion of preparation, the student must inform the K-12 Advisor of their desire to take the official GED Test.
- The K-12 Advisor will complete the Florida GED Testing Program Underage Waiver Form and submit it to the District School Board for approval.
Truancy Procedures
- Home Education students are subject to the Truancy Policy and will be considered truant if they fail to apply/register with the Superintendent, provide documentation, or provide required student logs and/or reports.
- The Center for Student Success and Services offers GED enrollment and assistance for students in preparation for the examination.
- The Department initiates truancy referrals for all students under the age of eighteen who have been reported as withdrawn or "dropped out" from school.
- Students who withdraw or drop out of school must contact the Center for Student Success and Services within three business days and complete the GED Commitment Form.
