Scaffolding Overview
- Scaffolding is an elevated temporary structure with a platform used to support workers, equipment, and materials.
Types of Scaffolding
- Single Pole Scaffolding: secured by standing against the wall, used by painters and construction workers who use light equipment.
- Double Pole Scaffolding: can stand alone, used when heavy equipment and materials are needed for construction.
Scaffold Safety Rules
- Follow safe practices, comply with OH&S laws, and local rules, codes, and regulations.
- Ensure personnel are instructed in safety rules, safe practices, and procedures, and are under the supervision of an experienced person.
- Report any unsafe conditions to supervisors.
- Do not work on scaffolds when sick or suffering from dizziness, unsteadiness, or physical symptoms that affect ability to work safely.
- Inspect all equipment before use, and never use damaged, defective, or deteriorated equipment.
- Inspect assembled scaffold frequently, ensure components have not been improperly released or removed.
- Maintain equipment in good condition, never use corroded or excessively rusted equipment.
- Consult scaffolding supplier when in doubt, never take chances.
- Always read safety rules in conjunction with all safety regulations.
- Place scaffolds on a stable surface, ensure it can support intended loads.
