When conducting a cluster sample, is it better to have fewer clusters with more individuals if the clusters are heterogeneous?

Yes, it helps to reduce variability within clusters. (D)
Signup and view all the answers

Flashcards

Simple Random Sampling

A method of selecting a sample from a population where every member of the population has an equal chance of being chosen.

Systematic Sampling

A method of selecting a sample from a population where every nth member is chosen, starting from a random point.

Stratified Sampling

A method of selecting a sample from a population where the population is divided into groups (strata), and random samples are selected from each stratum.

Cluster Sampling

A method of selecting a sample from a population where the population is divided into clusters (groups), and random samples of clusters are selected.

Reliability of Voluntary Response Samples

Inferences based on voluntary response samples are unreliable because they often represent only a specific group with strong opinions.

Having fewer clusters with more individuals in each cluster is better for heterogeneous populations in cluster sampling.

Study Notes

Sampling Methods

 • Simple Random Sampling: Every member of the population has an equal chance of being selected. A smaller sample size is needed compared to other methods to obtain the same amount of information.
 • Cluster Sampling: The population is divided into clusters (groups). A random selection of clusters is made, and all members within those selected clusters are included in the sample. Fewer clusters with more individuals is better when clusters are heterogeneous.
 • Stratified Sampling: Dividing the population into strata (groups with similar characteristics). A simple random sample is taken from each stratum. The number of individuals in each stratum does not need to be equal.
 • Systematic Sampling: Selecting every nth member of the population, starting from a randomly selected point.
 • Convenience Sampling: Choosing individuals who are easily accessible. Inferences are not reliable.
 • Voluntary Response Sampling: Individuals self-select to participate in the sample. Inferences are not reliable.
