Workplace Safety and Salon Practices

OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) regulates workplace safety.
Salons located in residential homes must have an exterior entrance.
Do not store chemicals or disinfectants in the salon bathroom.

Hair and Scalp Conditions

Ringworm is a fungal infection.
Psoriasis is characterized by red skin patches with silvery scales.
Lice can be spread through clothing.
Rosacea: Red, inflamed cheeks and pustules.
Malignant melanoma (skin cancer) appears as dark patches or spots on the skin.
Sebaceous glands produce too much sebum, causing oily dandruff.
An "itch mite" buries under the skin.
Stages of hair growth: Anagen stage is where new hair is produced.
Hair's outermost layer: Cuticle.
Base colour of gray hair: Neutral.

Hair Treatments and Services

Alkaline wave = cold wave
When perming, remove cotton from the client after application and before processing.
Chemicals, including perm solution, penetrate the cortex (hair shaft).
Diameter of the perm rod determines curl size.
Correcting orange, lightened hair: Use blue toner
Applying virgin relaxer: 1/2 - 3/4 inch from scalp and 1 inch from ends
Base cream is for the scalp and skin when relaxing hair
4 sections for relaxer application.
Neutralizing a hydroxide relaxer: Use a neutralizing shampoo.
Do not use a hobby drill for a nail drill.
80-grit nail file is coarse, 120-grit is fine (for acrylics and natural nails).
Do not perform a nail service on a client with inflamed cuticles.
Vertical cutting line for texturizing.
Mobile salon: Provide TDLR with a permanent physical address.
Temporary hair color does not chemically alter the hair.
Chemical drape: towel, cape, towel.
Special events: Perform services away from the salon.
Client with resistant/virgin hair: Use an alkaline perm.
Which implement is not used during a pedicure: Creedo blade.
Correcting unwanted tones (e.g. orange) use blue toner
Fillers equalize hair porosity.
Off-base perm roll creates softer curls.
Fish hooks: Uncurled ends of hair.

Nail Services
