- Takbir (starting prayer) is the first step in salat
- Ruku (bowing) involves bending the knees and placing hands on the knees
- Sujud (prostration) involves placing the forehead, nose, and hands on the ground
- Qiyam (standing) is the position before ruku
- Jalsa (sitting) is the position between the two sujud
