Study Notes
Saddle Requirements
- Saddle must be 3/4 inch thick with front of the D-ring located no further toward the cantle than the rear of the swells
- Cantle height must not exceed 5 inches from the jockey to the highest point
- Swells cannot be wider than 14 inches or undercut more than 1 inch on either side
- Stirrups must hang on bars and be no shorter than 14 inches
- Leather latigo straps are required
- No "freaks" allowed
Calf Roping Requirements
- Minimum of half enough calves for the biggest day or 1/3 of the total entries, whichever is greater
- Calves can only be drawn twice per day unless another animal is crippled
- Catch time limit is 30 seconds
- Only one loop is permitted
- A dropped loop is considered a thrown loop
- Contestants will receive a "no time" for missing the loop
- Rope must be tied to the saddle horn with a string provided by the Breakaway Director and a handkerchief or colorful cloth attached to the rope at the saddle horn
- Penalty for misplacement of the handkerchief or string will be disqualification
- No coils or knots are allowed between the end of the rope and the string
- The Judge will flag the contestant when the rope breaks away from the saddle horn, and time will be taken
- A "no time" will be awarded if the contestant breaks the rope away from the saddle horn with their hand
- If the rope dally's around the horn, the contestant may ride forward, un-dally the rope, and stop their horse to make the rope breakaway from the horn
- The contestant must pass through the barrier before throwing their loop
- A 10-second penalty will be assessed for breaking the barrier
Steer Roping Requirements
- Steer horns must be blunted to the size of a dime or greater
- Minimum number of steers required is half enough for the biggest day or 1/3 of the total entries, whichever is greater
- Steers can only be drawn twice per day unless another animal is crippled
Legal Catches
- Three legal head catches are acceptable:
- Head or both horns
- Half a head
- Around the neck
- Dew claw catches are legal if the catch holds for the field judges
Barrel Racing Pattern
- The standard pattern is 60 feet from the score line to the first barrel, 90 feet from the first to second barrel, and 105 feet from the second to the third barrel
- The pattern should be adjusted to accommodate the arena
- If the arena does not have an alleyway, the judges should allow ample stopping room from the gate to the electric eye
