Study Notes
4-Way Stop
- All traffic from four directions must stop at a 4-way stop.
- First vehicle at the intersection proceeds first.
- If vehicles arrive simultaneously, the driver on the left must yield to the driver on the right.
Yield
- Slow down and give right-of-way to vehicles crossing your path.
- If clear, proceed slowly without stopping.
Move Over
- When nearing stopped emergency/service vehicles with flashing lights, move over or reduce speed to 20 mph below the posted limit.
Railroad Crossing
- Drivers and pedestrians must stop within 50 feet, but no less than 15 feet from the nearest railroad rail when:
- Warning devices are flashing.
- The crossing gate is lowered.
- A flagger is present.
- An approaching train is visible.
Drawbridge Signal
- Red: Stop completely at marked line; bridge is operating, roadway closed.
- Yellow: Proceed with caution, stop if safe; bridge about to operate.
- Green: Proceed with caution.
Turn Signals
- Signal at least 100 feet before making a turn.
Open Intersections
- An open intersection lacks traffic control signs/signals.
- Yield if:
- A vehicle is already in the intersection.
- Entering state highway from a secondary road.
- Entering a paved road from an unpaved road.
- Making a left turn with an oncoming vehicle.
Open Intersections - Yielding Rules
- When two vehicles reach an open intersection at the same time, the left driver yields to the right driver.
Roundabouts
- Circular intersections with no traffic signals; traffic flows counter-clockwise.
- Drivers entering must yield to traffic within the roundabout.
- No lane changes or stops in the roundabout; signal before exiting.
Multi-Lane Roundabouts
- Same rules as single-lane but choose the proper lane beforehand.
- Use the right lane for straight or right turns.
Traffic Lanes
- Drive in the right lane on two-lane highways unless overtaking.
- On roads with four or more lanes, stay in the right lanes except when passing.
- Center lane of a three or five-lane highway is for left turns only.
Following Distance
- Determine following distance by timing seconds to a stationary marker.
- Follow no closer than four seconds behind.
Passing
- Maintain a safe distance behind the vehicle to avoid limited visibility.
- Ensure adequate time and space before passing.
- Signal when moving into the left lane; use horn/light to alert the other driver.
- Do not return to the right lane until you see the passed vehicle’s tires in your mirror.
- Must return to the right side before 200 feet of an oncoming vehicle.
Low Visibility Conditions
- Use low beam headlights in fog, wildfires, or heavy rain.
- Avoid using hazard lights unless the vehicle is stopped and broken down.
- Use edge lines or center lines as visual guides.
Night Driving
- Headlights required between sunset and sunrise.
- Use low beams within 300 feet of another vehicle and 500 feet of oncoming traffic.
- Turn on parking lights when parked outside cities at night.
- It’s illegal to drive using only parking lights.
- Low beams effective up to 20-25 mph; high beams reveal objects up to 450 feet for faster speeds.
