Rizal used historical scholarship to challenge colonial ideology in the Philippines by writing historical essays and articles which made sense of factual information about the Philippines and helped the Filipino people understand that they owe nothing to the Spanish and that the Filipinos' transformation from barbarism to civilization through Spanish colonialism is not a valid justification for tolerating the oppression carried out by the Spanish government.

By doing so, Rizal was able to give the Filipino people a representation and also provided a basis for constructing a national identity that would be taken up by other Filipino nationalist leaders, such as Bonifacio, who incorporated them into the ideology of the Katipunan.
