Study Notes

Respiratory Tract Infections

Pneumonia

  • Inflammation of the air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs
  • Caused by bacterial, viral, or fungal infections
  • Symptoms:
    • Coughing, fever, chills, and fatigue
    • Chest pain, difficulty breathing, and confusion in severe cases
  • Diagnosis: Chest X-ray, blood tests, and sputum analysis
  • Treatment: Antibiotics, antivirals, or antifungals depending on the cause

Bronchitis

  • Inflammation of the bronchial tubes (airways)
  • Caused by viral or bacterial infections
  • Symptoms:
    • Coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath
    • Chest congestion, fatigue, and mild fever
  • Diagnosis: Physical examination, medical history, and lung function tests
  • Treatment: Rest, hydration, and medications to relieve symptoms
  • Acute bronchitis: usually resolves on its own
  • Chronic bronchitis: long-term inflammation, often associated with COPD

Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTIs)

  • Infections affecting the nose, throat, and sinuses
  • Caused by viral or bacterial infections
  • Symptoms:
    • Runny nose, sneezing, and sinus pressure
    • Sore throat, coughing, and headache
  • Diagnosis: Physical examination, medical history, and laboratory tests (if necessary)
  • Treatment: Rest, hydration, and over-the-counter medications to relieve symptoms
  • Examples: Common cold, pharyngitis, and sinusitis

Lower Respiratory Tract Infections (LRTIs)

  • Infections affecting the lungs and airways
  • Caused by bacterial, viral, or fungal infections
  • Symptoms:
    • Coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath
    • Chest pain, fever, and fatigue
  • Diagnosis: Physical examination, medical history, and laboratory tests (if necessary)
  • Treatment: Antibiotics, antivirals, or antifungals depending on the cause
  • Examples: Pneumonia, bronchitis, and tuberculosis
