Study Notes
Respiratory System Overview
- The respiratory system is composed of three main parts: upper, middle, and lower respiratory tracts.
Upper Respiratory Tract
- Includes the nose, paranasal sinuses, pharynx, and larynx.
- Provides entry for inhaled air.
- Mucus-producing cells trap bacteria and particulates.
- Cools and moistens the inhaled air.
- The larynx functions as the organ of speech.
Middle Respiratory Tract
- Comprises the trachea, supported by cartilaginous rings for structure.
Lower Respiratory Tract
- Contains the right and left main bronchi, leading to bronchioles and alveoli.
- Alveoli are lined with mucous for protection, except in the alveoli themselves.
Alveoli Functions
- Produce pulmonary surfactant, a mixture of lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates.
Tuberculosis
- Caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
- Can be acute or chronic, leading to granulomas, fibrosis, and cavitation.
- Abscesses result from the destruction and dilation of bronchial walls due to pus accumulation.
- Hematogenous spread can lead to tuberculosis in distant sites such as the urogenital tract or brain.
- Bacterial dissemination may also result in intestinal tuberculosis.
