Study Notes
Respiratory System Overview
- Breath represents life, the first breath and last gasp are dramatic moments
- Breathing is necessary for ATP synthesis and eliminating carbon dioxide
- The respiratory system delivers air to the lungs for oxygen diffusion and carbon dioxide removal
Respiratory System Function
- Provides oxygen for metabolism
- Removes carbon dioxide waste
- Other functions: communication (speech), smell, and regulating blood pressure
Respiratory System Anatomy
- Upper respiratory tract
- Nose, nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx
- Lower respiratory tract
- Trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli
- Conducting zone (no gas exchange)
- Respiratory zone (gas exchange)
Nose (Nasus)
- Warms, cleanses, and humidifies inhaled air
- Detects odors
- Resonating chamber amplifying voice
- Nostrils (nares) are anterior openings, choanae are posterior
Pharynx (Throat)
- Muscular funnel extending from choanae to larynx
- Has three regions:
- Nasopharynx
- Oropharynx
- Laryngopharynx
Larynx (Voice Box)
- Cartilaginous structure (Adams apple - thyroid cartilage)
- Prevents food/drink from entering the airway
- Essential for voice production (phonation)
Trachea and Bronchi
- Flexible tube (windpipe)
- C-shaped rings of cartilage
- Branches into right and left bronchi
Bronchial Tree
- Branches progressively into smaller branches
- Bronchi -> bronchioles -> alveoli (air sacs) for gas exchange
- Alveoli are terminal structures, thin for efficient exchange
Lungs (Pulmones)
- Apex (top) and base (bottom)
- Three faces: Costal, diaphragmatic, and mediastinal
- Root of the lung (hilum) where vessels and nerves enter/exit
- Lobes: Right lung typically has three lobes; Left lung usually has two
Pleura
- Two-layered serous membrane; visceral pleura covers the lung, parietal pleura lines the thoracic cavity.
- Potential space (pleural cavity) between layers contains fluid reducing friction during breathing
