Study Notes

What is a Resource?

  • Anything that has utility or value and is used to satisfy human wants.

Classification of Resources

  • Resources are broadly classified into 3 categories: Natural, Human-made, and Human.

Natural Resources

  • Derived from nature.

  • Classified into:

    Based on Region

    • Biotic resources: Derived from living things.
    • Abiotic resources: Derived from non-living things in nature.

    Based on Use and Development

    • Actual or developed resources: Resources that have been discovered, developed, and are currently being used (e.g., iron and coal deposits in Jharkhand, petroleum deposits in West Asian countries).
    • Potential resources: Resources that are not being used presently due to lack of technology, but can be used in the future when technology advances (e.g., uranium in Ladakh, biofuel, high-speed winds, and solar energy).

    Based on Availability

    • Renewable resources: Can be renewed or replenished within a short span of time (e.g., forests, wildlife, soil, water).
    • Non-renewable resources: Cannot be replenished within a short period of time (e.g., metallic minerals, coal, petroleum, and natural gas).

    Based on Distribution

    • Ubiquitous resources: Found everywhere (e.g., air, water, land).
    • Localised resources: Concentrated in certain regions (e.g., metals, coal).

Human-made Resources

  • Created by humans using technology, knowledge, and skills.
  • Examples: Houses, roads, schools, banks, machines.
  • Technology used to create a resource is itself a human-made resource.

Human Resources

  • Consists of people and their skills.
  • Most important resource on earth, as all resources derive their meaning and value from the needs of people.
  • Human resource development aims to improve people's skills and knowledge to enable them to be more efficient and productive.
  • Equips people with the skills needed to have a healthy and satisfying life.

Conservation of Resources

  • Humans need resources for survival, and increasing population leads to increased demand and consumption.
  • Sustainable development aims to fulfill present needs without compromising future generations' needs.
  • The 4Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Refuse.
  • Other ways to conserve resources: avoid paper and plastic, close unused apps, switch off fans and lights.

This quiz covers the classification of resources into natural, human-made, and human resources. It also explores the subcategories of natural resources based on region and use.
