Energy Use

  • When significant energy use is anticipated, the Borrower will adopt measures specified in EHSGs to optimize energy usage, to the extent technically and financially feasible.

Water Use

  • Projects significantly using water (or with potential significant impacts on water quality) will implement measures to avoid or minimize impacts on communities, users, and the environment. This includes water conservation measures, alternative water supplies, water consumption offsets, and evaluation of alternative project locations.
  • For high-water-demand projects, a detailed water balance will be developed, monitored, and reported.
  • Water use efficiency (volume per unit of production) will be benchmarked to industry standards.
  • Operations must be benchmarked against available industry standards of water usage, and water usage (volume per unit of production) will be assessed; and benchmarked against available industry standards. Projects must consider the potential impact of water use on surrounding communities, and the environment.
  • Raw materials must be considered, and potentially toxic/hazardous substances reduced/eliminated to mitigate adverse impacts. Consideration must be given to cumulative water use impacts on communities and the environment.

Raw Material Use

  • The Borrower will adopt measures in EHSGs and other GIIP to support efficient raw material use, where technically and financially feasible.

Pollution Prevention and Management

  • Avoid pollutant release, or if not feasible, minimize and control release concentrations and flows (according to national laws or EHSGs) affecting air, water, and land. This includes routine, non-routine, and accidental circumstances and potential local, regional, and transboundary impacts.
  • Historical pollution requiring remediation will be assessed for responsibility and risks to human health/the environment. A documented assessment of responsible party(ies) is required. Remediation will prioritize the use of international standards/guidelines to comply with national levels, and will consider recourse to third parties when applicable.
  • Remediation/risk assessments must comply with national laws and GIIP standards.
  • Prioritize reuse, recycle, and recover waste whenever possible. Appropriate treatment, destruction, safe, environmentally sound disposal of unavoidable waste.
  • Comply with national and international conventions for hazardous waste management.
  • Include consideration of specific waste types like municipal, e-waste, & animal waste.
  • A risk assessment to identify and manage the potential risks associated with the project's impact on the environment & human health, including local, regional, & transboundary impacts, is required. Historical pollution requiring remediation must include a health and safety risk assessment of existing pollution.
  • Remediation of historical sites will comply with all relevant national/international regulations. Establish responsibility for any historical pollution, accounting for both domestic and international factors.

  • Air pollutant sources will be characterized and estimated where appropriate. This includes an estimate of gross GHG emissions, a measure of pollution and potential future trends, which must be produced by the Borrower wherever practical. The bank will provide assistance to the borrower in cases where it’s not practical.
  • This estimate is not required for small or diverse sources, low-emission projects (social protection, education, community driven development or projects with insignificant emissions).
  • Operations must be benchmarked with available industry standards, and potential environmental or health concerns. A cumulative risk assessment is required.

Hazardous and Non-hazardous Waste Management

  • Avoid generation of hazardous/non-hazardous waste.
  • Prioritize reuse, recycle, and recovery where possible. Safe, environmentally sound, appropriate waste treatment, destruction, or disposal methods are required.
  • Comply with national and international conventions for hazardous waste handling (including storage, transportation, and disposal). Use of national legislation and international conventions/agreements must be met. Use of GIIP used as alternative measure where national standards are absent.
