Study Notes
Method Section
- The most important section of a research paper.
- Provides a clear description of how research was conducted.
- Details the steps taken to answer the research question.
- Explains how results were analyzed.
Importance of Method Section
- Must contain enough information for a reader to replicate the research to evaluate whether the results are reproducible.
- Allows the audience to judge whether the results and conclusions are valid.
Method Section Components
- Typically divided into three subsections: Participants, Materials, Procedure
Method Section Details
- Participants: Information includes the number of participants, procedures for selecting participants (e.g., random, opportunistic), demographic information (age, gender, occupation, educational level), and any participants who did not complete the experiment, including the number and reasons.
- Materials: Describe materials used and their function in enough detail for replication. Include information like number of words in a word list, approximate length of words, capitalization, etc. A copy of the materials can be included in an appendix at the end of the paper.
- Procedure: Detailed instructions like a recipe or Lego building instructions. Describes exactly what happened in the study and in what order. Includes instructions given to participants. Should be logical and contain sufficient information for the reader to follow.
Methodology: General Rules
- Always use the past tense.
- Subheadings can be useful for organization (e.g., field sampling and lab procedures).
- Subheadings should differ in font and position from major headings.
- The reader should be able to visualize the activity and recreate it.
- This allows readers to evaluate the legitimacy of the study and replicate it as much as possible.
- Insufficient detail prevents readers from understanding and replicating the study.
- The level of detail needed depends on the nature of the study. What is trivial in one study may be critical in another.
