Study Notes
Renal Processes
- Reabsorption: the process by which solutes are reabsorbed into the vascular system
- Secretion: the process by which solutes move back into the renal tubule system
Regulation of Urine Composition
- Diuresis: a process that increases the volume of urine produced
- Naturesis: a process that increases renal sodium excretion
- Aquaretic: a process that increases the excretion of solute-free water
Proximal Convoluted Tubule (PCT)
- Located in the cortex of the kidney
- Responsible for reabsorbing most of the glucose, bicarbonate, amino acids, and other metabolites
- Secretes organic acids, including bile salts, uric acid, catecholamines, toxins, NSAIDS, and antibiotics
- Reabsorbs 65% of filtered Na+ and water
- Highly permeable to water, which maintains a constant osmolality with the interstitial fluid
- Has the highest rate of O2 consumption among kidney structures
