Relining, Repair, Rebasing Complete Dentures
- Relining: Resurfacing or correcting denture fit to underlying tissues. A new material is added to the fitting surface without altering the occlusal relationship.
- Repairing: Dentures may fracture from use or impact. Repair involves accurately reassembling and aligning broken parts.
- Rebasing: Readapting a denture to underlying tissues by replacing the denture base material with new material. Occlusal relations remain unchanged.
- Indications for Relining: Dentures poorly fitting, compromised vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO) due to tissue changes, poor esthetics due to bone loss, or irritated tissue from ill-fitting dentures.
- Factors Affecting Reline Decision: Correct occluding vertical dimension, and stable or correctable centric relation occlusal position.
- Contraindications for Relining: Severe denture wear and poor appearance, preventing a successful reline. A poor, uncorrectable occlusal plane.
- Impression Making Differences: Use the existing denture as an impression tray, maintain vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO) and centric relation. Different procedures are used for closed-mouth and open-mouth techniques
- Types of Relining: Clinical and laboratory relining
- Closed-Mouth Technique: Patient closes and maintains proper occlusion at correct VDO while impression material sets.
- Open-Mouth Technique: Patient does not maintain occlusal contact, often requires occlusal equilibration at insertion and can allow the denture to be misaligned.
- Relining Procedure Tips: Avoid holes in the mandible, create space for impression material at least 1 mm from fitting surface. Use adhesive to position VPS material.
Rebasing Procedure
- Procedure: Take impressions of both arches using complete dentures as trays, then send to the lab.
Repair Procedure
- Procedure: Accurate reassembly and alignment of broken parts into original position.
