Study Notes
Refraction
- Refraction is the bending of light as it passes from one medium to another. This is noticeable when looking at objects underwater, where the light appears to come from a different position than it actually does.
- The normal is an imaginary line perpendicular to the surface where the light ray strikes the surface.
- The incident ray is the light ray traveling from the light source toward the surface. Upon hitting a surface, the ray splits into two components: one that reflects off the surface and one that enters the new medium.
- A refracted ray is the light ray that changes direction as it passes into a new medium.
- The angle of incidence is the angle between the incident ray and the normal.
- The angle of refraction is the angle between the refracted ray and the normal.
