Study Notes

Backward Chaining

  • Uses backward chaining, beginning by teaching all steps of a behavior in reverse order.
  • The student is required to complete the last step with minimal prompting to receive reinforcement.
  • Step 5 and the learner then complete Step 6 and Step 7 to receive reinforcement.
  • Steps 1-4 are taught, and the learner will eventually complete Steps 5, 6, and 7, and so on.
  • Brushing teeth breaks down into getting the toothbrush, putting on toothpaste, opening the faucet and wetting the toothbrush, brushing teeth for 30 seconds, spitting, rinsing the toothbrush and placing it back, rinsing the mouth, and closing the faucet.

Documentation

  • As an RBT, one must report to their supervisor, along with data, progress notes, and anything else important to how a client responds to treatment.
  • The supervisor must be notified immediately in the event of emergency situations, abuse calls, crisis management that requires restraining a client (with authorized usage and certification), and/or medication side effects affecting treatment.

Behavior Reduction & Topography

  • Behaviors are observable and measurable, and are anything a person does. If a dead man can do it, it is not considered a behavior.
  • Behavior Topography must be observable so the behavior can be observed.
  • Behaviors unobservable include understanding, thinking, and feeling.
  • Measurable behaviors are described so that another can agree to when it occurred.

Physical Agression

  • Topography is any instance of someone pushing or scratching others
  • Target Behavior - conduct that is to be changed
  • Target Behavior is a desired, objective behavior
  • Topography is the description of the conduct
  • It must be observable and measurable

Scenarios

  • Susy pinching her sister is behavior
  • Allan being depressed is not behavior
  • Jane wanting a drink is behavior
  • Maria biting her hand is behavior
  • Ana yawning is behavior
  • James being excited, is not behavior
  • Julie saying "cow" when she sees a cow, is behavior
  • Susy pushed peer, is behavior
  • Shawn is sleeping, is behavior
  • The wind blew Johnny 2 feet from his stance, This is not behavior
  • The wind blew Johnny 2 feet from his stance is not behavior
  • Maria is making bubbles with her hands is behavior

RBT Responsibilities

  • Definitions of RBT responsibilities must likely come from the supervisor or some other source.
  • Reviewing definitions of RBT responsibilities at each supervision session is also recommended.
  • Ensuring the responsibility is understood by all guarantees accurate record keeping.
  • The RBT is expected to record behavior before any intervention to observe a current rate in an environment.
  • Also done to compare behavior before and after intervention.
  • In most cases, the undesirable and the new skill are recorded.

Task Analysis and Chaining

  • Task: a form of analysis that involves a complex skill broken down into various steps to complete the behavior.
  • Do the task yourself and then break it down step by step to teach the student.
  • Brushing your teeth is a behavior that requires several steps.
  • All these steps become a chain.

Stimulus Prompt Fading

  • In stimulus prompt fading one begins to fade, or take away, the stimulus.
  • Colors, bananas, and apples are stimulus that can be faded out so that only the letters are presented.
  • Stimulus prompt fading goes from most to least prompting.

Antecedents

  • Antecedents are events that occur immediately before a behavior.
  • Antecedents set the stage for a behavior to occur.
  • They help determine functions of a behavior.
  • Antecedents can be manipulated to prevent behavior from ever occurring.
  • Antecedents are internal or external stimulus (environment).
  • Antecedents trigger behavior

Antecedent and Behavior Examples

  • Loud noise leads a person to cover their ears.
  • Seeing a cockroach leads someone to scream.
  • Light turning green leads someone to honk at car in front of you.
  • Asking "How are you?" prompts someone to answer "Good and you?".
  • Asking, "Where do you want to eat?" prompts someone to say "Anywhere".
  • Sad song plays on the radio is an antecedent to crying.
  • Friend ordering an alcoholic beverage prompts someones to say, "I want the same".
  • Mom says "no" when you grab a candy, antecedent to biting mother

Documentation Requirement

  • One must be supervised by the BACB certified behavior analyst upon passing the RBT exam.
  • Regular meetings may be required at least two times per month.
  • At least one of the meetings should be face-to-face
  • A supervisor must supervise you 5% of the hours worked as an RBT.
  • Working 20 hours per week requires one hour or 2 hours bi-weekly.
  • Progress notes must include a summary of client progress, implemented procedures, client participation, whether goals were met, and any changes in maladaptive behavior intensity.
